how do i help my friend who is addicted to cough syrup?

He doesn’t want help or to talk to anyone, but i’m really worried about how it’s affecting him. He says he can’t sleep or go a day without drinking more than a cap.

It's all in his head. Cough syrup is not addictive. Otherwise, it could not be legally sold over-the-counter.

The active ingredient in NyQuil, etc., that helps you sleep is EXACTLY the same ingredient as Benadryl (diphenhydramine). It's just an antihistamine. One of the side effects is that it makes most people pretty sleepy -- so they market that side effect as a sleep aid (e.g., zzzQuil). But it is in no way addictive. He can stop anytime he wants to with no ill effects.
