In NYC why does a studio/1 bedroom apartment cost way more than a 2/3 bedroom apartment divided evenly among roommates? ?

I guess that's true for any city, but I notice it a lot more when looking at apartments for nyc

Rents are not per person.  What the cost would be split between roommates is irrelevant to setting the total rent amount.

The common spaces are split up, not the bedrooms.  In a 1bed unit, you're paying 100% for the common space.

Its that simple, honestly it is.

Because a studio / 1-bed gives you privacy and space, which you don't get in a shared place.

The kitchen and bathrooms probably cost more to build than the bedrooms.

If you add up the total that the three roommates pay, it's more.

Because most people would rather have a space to themselves than have to share and put up with noisy, messy, inconsiderate roommates.
