Let x = the lesser number.

Equation:

x + 2x + 7 = 22

3x = 15

x = 5

Answer: 5 is the lesser number. The other number is 2 * 5 + 7 or, 17. They total 22.

Let x be one number.

Let 2x + 7 be the other number.

The sum is 22:

x + 2x + 7 = 22

3x + 7 = 22

3x = 22 - 7

3x = 15

x = 15/3

x = 5

Answer:One of the numbers is 5 (the other is 17).

The answer to the title question is YES. Good thing I know I got the answer correctly.

For the second question, the solution is:

If x=7+2y and x+y=22

Then putting them together would be:

7+2y+y=22

2y+y=22-7

3y=15

y=15/3

y=5

And going back to the given:

x=7+2y

x=7+2(5)

x=7+10

x=17

Which gives us the answer as either

5 or 17.

Let numbers be a and b. You are told: a - 7 = 2b

ALSO a + b = 22 (or a = 22 - b)

Substitute and solve for b

22 - b - 7 = 2b, gives 15 = 3b

So: b= 5, (AND as a check a = 17)

One number is one-third of the result of 22 less 7, so that would be 5.

Source(s): Providing both numbers is technically an incorrect answer to "What is one of the numbers?" - lenpol7Lv 78 months ago
Let the number be 'n'

#1 = n

#2 = 2n+7

n + 2n + 7 = 22

3n + 7 = 22

3n = 15

n = 5

2n + 7 = 17
