What would happen if the tobacco industry was stopped ?

    It would go underground, and a lot of people would be buying their tobacco from low level criminals who are all to eager to take advantage of such a huge market.

    Would there be less smokers? Probably yes, but you can never completely eliminate tobacco from human culture, at least not in this century...

    A huge black market would open up.

    Thousands of workers on the dole.

    Police would be kicking in doors to find the contraband.

    States would lose Millions of Dollars in Tax Revenue, which means personal property and income taxes will go up, plus more taxes to enforce the contraband laws. (A redo of the "War on Drugs" and "Prohibition bribes".)

    It would go underground and people would also grow their own tobacco for sale and consumption. Tobacco plants will grow even in the UK climate.
