You can only sell 5 a year, unless you have a business license. You're going to spend a lot of money & get zero return. No tools, no garage, no talent = lost cash.

You should start by working for someone who does this so you can learn the ropes. Going into it without any knowledge is going to cost you al LOT of money.

You should start by becoming a master mechanic. In the time it takes, you will get a better brainstorm.

get your head examined we have a full workshop 3 hoists pretty much every tool needed we cant make any money out of buying shitheaps fixing them up and selling them after you've sold 1 or 2 dungers word gets around these blokes dud things up.
Parts cost money even thou we get them at trade price usually 35% less than you pay over the counter. How in good faith do you sell a car that you know is a dunger?

Go to city hall and ask in Business licensing department because it is a business and you MUST GIVE THE CITY MONEY FOR A LICENSE TO OPERATE. Also you will need a shop in a commercial area (chances are you live in Residential only zoning) so you need to rent a shop.
. So right off the bat you see you got to be serious because there is money you got to put out first BEFORE you earn your first dollar.
. So as a shade tree mechanic you can work on cars you buy(pay for completely)...so beaters. and FIX them up. The hopefully you can sell it to some kid. for not much more. After all you want to sell it, not be stuck with repaired cars in the yard (or field or pasture which you get to store it there rent free) Meaning you got to have friends.
You "could" buy cars at an auction. But you are bidding against other people that may want it for the same reason. But you should know what to watch out for otherwise you may be buying an unrepairable vehicle. Burnt vehicles is worse than flood damaged IMO. Both have to be disassembled completely and then reassembled and rewired and repainted.
You got to be multi-talented to do all these tasks.
No tools, no experience generally = no hope.
Better chance doing a DRUG DEAL.

That's a risky business for someone without mechanical knowledge and know how. If you have to pay a mechanic for the repairs you can't do - that can be quite expensive. Anyway, here's a few things you'll need:
1. Lots of money to buy the cars and fix them.
2. Check with your state Dept. of Motor Vehicles to find out how many cars you can sell per year without requiring a Dealers License.
3. Brush up on the legalities of used car sales in your state. Like if you sell a car and it won't pass inspection - even though used cars are sold "As Is" you might have to buy the car back. (Certain states have great protections for the buyer - not (you) the seller).
4. Get a separate phone number for your business - or you're gonna have a lot of unhappy people calling you at your house or cell phone.
I suggest you buy a car to sell and see how much you can make - and if it's worth the hassle. Good luck.Source(s): II

If you don't know how to fix vehicles, you better learn. Paying someone else to do it will wipe out your potential profits fast.
You should also find out what you can legally do where you live. Most areas have a limit to how many vehicles you can sell legally per year as a private individual. If you sell any more, you have to register yourself as a dealer.

Buy an old car, buy the tools and start fixing it up. Diagnosis of the issues is the key to a profitable business, throwing parts at a problem until you find it is not profitable. You have a very long learning curve ahead - maybe you should start small and start a car wash/wax and detailing business and see how that goes.
