Actual heavy metal comes from psychedelic music. It doesn't need to be brutal, angry or hateful. It only needs to be mind blowing.
Death metal has a punk element add to it ... it goal is to over whelm you with anger and hostility. A lot of Death metal belongs with punk music.
You can think of it like thrash vs. speed metal.

Isn't death metal a type of metal? You talking about thrash like Metallica?
If so, death metal is just thrash but more extreme, think blast beats, atonal riffs, and growling instead.

It depends on the band as to what their philosophy, lyrical content or message is,
but in general, death metal is far more extreme than standard metal.
Death metal bands often have gore & slasher type themes, but also equally popular death metal bands can have a political, religious, nature or science fiction themes
