When SARS first came out, did we know what viruses were?

I was wondering when back in the 2000s people knew what viruses were?

Yes, they knew what viruses were. Science provided that knowledge back around the turn of the 20th century.

Yes, we knew they were semi-living things that use living cells to multiply themselves

Viruses were discovered in the 1800's, lots of people knew about viruses 20 years ago.  Believe it or not, they used to teach real science in school back then.

Of course we knew what viruses were in the 2000's.

This is the kind of question I would expect of someone not even 16 years old, since kids don't bother doing any research and yet don't know anything.
