Why did African leaders participate, along with Europeans, in the enslavement of other Africans in the Atlantic slave trade?

Money is the root of most of this stuff. Supply and demand. Workers (cheap ones) were needed for labouring in the fields in the New World mainly.....so people made money by enslaving Africans, carting them off to America's plantations and selling them for profit. No doubt, with tribal rivalries going on, some African leaders made deals (for profit) with the slavers and aided and abetted them in their horrible pursuits. It got rid of their local opposition and put money in their own pockets. It was a nasty business altogether wasn't it.

Money.  The African slave trade was immensely profitable for those Africans who took part in it.  They were making money off of this.  Europeans supplied them with goods which they wanted.

You've also got to understand that they didn't conceive of the people they were selling as "other Africans".  Obviously, the African slave merchants knew that that the people they were selling had dark skin like them.  But they didn't view that as a meaningful shared identity.  It would be like saying that blonde Americans and blonde Russians should see themselves as having something in common.  The largest source of slaves for the slave trade were wars.  An awful lot of the male slaves sold overseas were POWs.  For the African rulers who authorized these trades, and profited off of them, these weren't their own people, they were enemies.  Sometimes these were people who they had longstanding political conflicts with.  Or maybe it was a religious conflict between Muslims and pagans (or between Muslims and other Muslims viewed as heretical).  These divisions, of ethnicity, politics, religion, etc, were what mattered to Africans at the time, not the distinction of black skin vs white skin.

Because it was a long standing business in the still in the Sone Age continent. Chiefs, clans got money from selling each other.

Neither Arabs or Europeans created African slavery, it already existed, they just monopolized it for their own purposes.

What makes the world go around? Money. Plus, Africa was not a nation so much as it was a collection of about 400 tribes. The reason Americans thought they were not intelligent is because very few of them spoke the same language as other slaves so they could not communicate.

    Inter-tribal wars.

Rather than have dead meat bags, the smart ones found a market for the live, captured, enemy.

In a minor way, the captured warriors (losers) got a second chance to life, even if it was 50-50.

Because they wanted money and could alleviate themselves of opposing tribes at the same time.
