how to deal with an email scam?

this guy emailed my professor asking for a tutor then requested that, along with my payment, i send his "friend" 1,000 dollars. i knew this was a scam but i am wondering if there is anything i could do to prevent this from happening to anyone else. this was on outlook email. thanks y all!!

p.s. i was told to contact the police but i was wondering if there was a less intense way to deal with this dude.

The police won’t be interested, the emails originate from anywhere in the world, for the Far East, Africa, the Baltic states or closer to home.

The easiest solution is to mark the email as spam or junk and the email server will mark this and similar emails as junk and block them automatically
