why smoking tobacco was so popular among Europeans after they learned of tobacco from Indians?

is it true that they even thought of tobacco as a healthy herb to smoke and was good for the body? what they thought of the nicotine and how it was healthy ? and how long this lasted? I heard that doctors and hospitals were even prescribing cigarettes for patients in the early 1900s ? is that true? where and why?

Nicotine is one of the most addictive substances around. It also is a stimulant. What did they have at that time as a stimulant? They had tea, coffee, maybe chocolate and tobacco.
