Why wouldn't Kobe's pilot just fly IFR?

    The  pilot was instrument rated and the helicopter is equipped for single pilot IFR flight.  However, their destination didn't have an instrument approach, so they had to go VFR.

    The results seem to indicate that was all he was actually qualified to do.

    What I have read is that the pilot was a CFII. I have also read that model of helicopter requires 2 pilots for IFR flight.

    It's actually rather unusual for a helicopter to be equipped with the proper navigation instruments to fly in IMC conditions. In this case, the pilot requested flight following, so I'm betting he didn't have the equipment OR the license to fly IFR.
