Why is the NFL season played over the Fall and Winter month?! Why can't it function like a regular outdoor sport season just like the MLB?!?

Football was never started out to go past Thanksgiveing. But greed kept extending the season.I get a kick out of people saying that games should be played in all weather. There was a reason they didn't play in Dec and Jan they weren't retarded.

Back in the 50s, the season was only 12 games, and they waited until mid-September to start.  (Football teams that played in baseball stadiums had to wait for the season to end, so they played two or three road games to start.)  The NFL Championship Game was played in the last week of December.  It always did overlap fall and winter, just not as blatantly as it does now.

Unlike baseball players football players are able to play in rain, cold and snow.

It's too dangerous to play baseball in the rain.  A wet ball could go out of control, and hit a batter.  BTW: The Blue Jays played their first game with snow on the field.  Look it up on You Tube (April 7, 1977).

Because professional sports such as football and baseball, try not overlap each too much, so they can get as many fans to watch one, without missing the other one.

Have you ever heard Baseball called "America's Pastime?"  Ever wonder why the term was never "America's SPORT?"

The popularity of Baseball began at the community level as a game played by farm hands and children at Summer picnics, so it has a long association with recreation, lazy afternoons and family time.  The popularity of American football began in our universities, making it more about rivalries, team pride and "doing battle" (comedian George Carlin once did a whole comedy routine on how football is like war and baseball is like a picnic).

The university connection also explains the timing of the season to this day, with teams competing during the fall and completing their seasons with the onset of winter.  Schools at all levels traditionally end their academic calendars in the late spring because that was the time many young people had to return to work on the family farm.

Although it has become fashionable to dismiss rural America the past few decades, a closer look at many of our modern-day "institutions" will reveal lingering hints of just how significant an impact farming (and farmers) has had on the things we consider most "American."

Because the tradition went that way and it was away from Baseball season which was the main sport when the NFL was founded.

In 1935, the most popular sports were baseball, boxing and horse racing.

Sure do. Watched it regularly. It didn't last, though. Every year, you hear of some NFL player collapsing from exercising in the heat of preseason. Imagine what would happen if the season extended through the summer.
