Is it stupid or selfish of me to live on disability checks?

Bottom-line: I was born with

Asperger's syndrome (mild autism).

It doesn't mean I'm stupid. It means I

h ave a hard time listening, socializing

and following directions. I learn by

reading and memorizing, not by listening.

As smart as I am in math and sciences,

I feel adult-standards are way too hard

for me. Writing 20 page essays in college

was daunting. Plus, working more than

30 hours/week is also really hard for me.

I burn out easily and need 14 hours/sleep

or I can't think straight.

I don't think there is much of a place for me

in the working-world. Most of the jobs I

can do are low-income, so now I'm stuck

working retail (part-time) and living off disability.

I always thought I would have

a good-future, until the rat-race

hit me like a ton of bricks. Your thoughts?

That the work ethic is vastly overrated and the amount of harm done simply so someone can make a living is vastly underrated. That work is pushed on people so they don't upset the apple cart and overthrow capitalism when they realise how sadistic it really is. So no, it's not selfish of you but humans need to do something to keep sane. I hope you find something which fits your talents and skills.

"Work ethic" is how we evolved as a species. We have always worked very hard to survive.

What else have you been diagnosed with. There's virutally zero chance of being granted disability if the only thing wrong with you (officially) is mild autism.

Welcome to the real world. At least you get disability most of America lives like that and that's all they have. You still think the American Dream is real huh? No that's just a scam from the 1940s and '50s. This is the way it always has been. Live and learn.

From your description, you don't qualify for disability checks.  So you don't have many options.

Have you had therapy?  If not, see what options are available.  I have a nephew with Asperger's who was diagnosed when he was 5-6 years old.  My sister got him into therapy immediately.  He learned a lot of coping mechanisms as well as social interaction skills.  He's now an engineer and has a normal life (for an engineer, that is).  The therapy really made a difference for him.

It's not stupid but it is selfish. There are many people out there who are truly disabled where you aren't. You admittedly just find adult life difficult. Many millions of people who support themselves and their families face that same dilemma daily at work.
