Perfectly legal if you're buying and selling YOUR property.

      How do you know?

Of course. You can buy and sell on your own account as much as you like. What you can't do is charge people money to help them buy or sell property for themselves.

Legal to buy - yes. Legal to sell - no, except your own house.

Yes, for yourself. Not on behalf of others.

Sure. You can't do this for other people, charging a fee but you can still act as buyer and seller on a transaction. The main problem with this (though there are certainly plenty of real estate investors doing it) is that in most places realtors have more and better access to information about what is available and therefore are usually first to get to the best deals. Also, some places (fannie, freddie, hud) won't even accept contracts unless tehy are put in by a realtor (to reduce junk contracts and their time with them) so you'd have to hire a realtor to represent you anyhow to bid on these.

Sure, anyone can buy property, and anyone can sell property they own. There is no rule that you have to hire a professional such as a Real Estate agent or attorney to help you with it. If you know what you're doing then you can sometimes save money by not using an agent.

What would be illegal is to present yourself as a trained professional, help other people buy and sell houses, and charge them a fee or a commission on the sale as compensation for your professional services, without having the proper license.

Yes.  What is illegal is to receive a commission on the sales without a real estate license.

Anyone (if they have the funds) can buy a house. You don't need an estate agent; they just facilitate the process.

Yes. Of course it is. What's not legal if you aren't a real estate agent is for you to represent others in the buying and selling of their houses.
