Can you get pregnant with an IUD ?

My sister said she's gonna have sex with her boyfriend this weekend but she's scared about getting pregnant. She's on the 5 year IUD this is her last year with it before she gets it removed. Is it still possible for her to get pregnant ?

I have a couple of friends that are OB/GYN’s and there has been a case where baby was born actually holding the previously implanted IUD in it little hands.

This was more than 30 years ago and IUD’s have been improved.  So is it possible, Yes, is it likely, No.

The only birth control that is 100% effective is a total hysterectomy for a woman or total castration for a man.

Your "friends" who  you say are OB/GYN's were handing you a line of bull. A baby couldn't have be born "holding the IUD in its little hands" because an IUD baby would never develop far enough to be born - it would die.  A man who has a vasectomy does NOT have a "total castration",

Sounds like she isn't emotionally ready for sex.

It's almost impossible for a woman who is using a 5-year IUD to get pregnant. An IUD causes thickening of cervical mucus, preventing the passage of sperm into the uterus.

Fewer than 8 out of 1,000 women who are using an IUD become pregnant over five years..

No method of birth control is 100% effective so the answer has to be yes.  The chance may be very  low but it's not zero.

IUDs are 99% effective. If they didn't still work after 4 years they wouldn't leave them in for 5 would they?

If she's that scared then her boyfriend should use a condom as well which would reduce the risk to virtually zero.

There is always the possibility. It’s almost impossible while on the IUD but it is possible
