Why are people buying so much TP? What is the logic behind it?

It’s panic induced hoarding. It’s the same idea as when there’s a snowstorm coming and people buy hundreds of dollars worth of canned food and supplies. Nobody ever gets stranded by snow for more than a couple days but that doesn’t stop them from thinking they need a months worth of canned food and batteries. There’s no logic behind it. It’s just irrational panic buying. If everyone bought the normal amount of food and toilet paper instead of trying to clean out the store, there would be more than enough for everyone. I don’t understand what people are doing with all that toilet paper. It’s been 6 weeks and people are still hoarding it. Morons lol.

Hoarding is a way for people to feel they have control over a situation they have little control over. Especially in a capitalist society, people react by hoarding.

There is no logic behind it. They are all very low IQ people, who can't use common sense and logic. Quarantine is TWO WEEKS. You will either recover in that time or you will require hospitalization, which means you won't need any of it. Any shortage will be because of their panicking and their greed. There shouldn't be any shortage really, because limits have been set by the government to curb the spreading. Of course, we all - in this country, need to use common sense and do what we have been told to do, so that the virus dies and doesn't continue to spread like a flowing river.

    There are two factors:

    (1) If you get quarantined for a month, or if the supply chains all shut down, TP would be among the worst things to run out of.

You also want to stock up on nonperishable foods, but there's enough variety of those that there hasn't been a huge rush on any one item.

    (2) When a few people buy up all the TP in your local store, it creates an artificial shortage for everyone else. Now you have to grab it when you can because you don't know whether it will be available later.

There is a reason why TP is being panic bought, but even panic buyers don't fully realize it. TP takes up a lot of real estate in a store. For example, one shelf that could hold 20 packs of TP could hold around 500 cans of soup. When 10 packs are bought, the TP shelf appears empty. When 10 cans of soup are bought, the shelf looks fine. When people see that the shelves are empty, the domino effect kicks in and they feel the need to stock up. People just want to buy it before it runs out, even if they don't need it. It's not logical to buy TP in mass quantities. It's just a subconscious reaction to seeing empty shelves.
