What does "subject" mean in e-mail?

    A line that briefly describes the topic of the message.

    It's a few words of what the topic of the email is about.

    For instance, if I'm emailing a company to ask for a refund about something.  My subject line will probably have something like, "Refund Requested."

    That is the line where you put what your email is about. Typically a couple of words is all you need, just so that the person who receives the email knows what it is about.
