Is the Coronavirus God’s way of PUNISHING the world?

I’m 17 and my local church and pastor has been delivering sermons saying that God sent the coronavirus in FURY for the world’s disobedience against Him and not keeping His commandments. My pastor said this is due to the world’s tolerance of adultery, LGBT people, fornication, divorce, abortion, false gods, etc.

He said over 28,000 people have died from the virus so far, and the church is praying for 28,000 more deaths (and even 28 MILLION more). He also said those 28,000 people are currently burning in Hell for eternity.

Last Sunday they praised and thanked God for sending the coronavirus into the breath of mankind and for destroying the rebellious mockers of our Creator.

I’m very uncomfortable with this ideology and beliefs and think it’s quite cruel, but my parents are devout Baptist Christians who claim to love mankind enough to speak the truth - and to warn their neighbor that their sin is taking them to hell. They claim God hates those affected with the coronavirus and He hates the people who died from it. Is this true? Why would God be so hateful and malicious?

You must be in the Westboro Baptist Church.  I am afraid they are deceived and I think you should do what "Bender" said and separate yourself from them as soon as possible.  Your Church seems to be confused between the Devil who Jesus said was a MURDERER from the beginning and the father of lies (John 8:44) and God our Almighty Saviour, Jesus Christ, who loved us so much that He came here to shed His precious blood in torture from the Romans and die on our behalf so that we could be forgiven for our sins and saved to spend eternity in Heaven, not Hell.  Of course those who reject Jesus Christ cannot be saved, we know that -  not because God wouldn't love to save everyone, He would, for it's not God's will that anyone perish but that ALL should come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9), but due to the fact that they need Christ's forgiveness to be saved, therefore if they reject Him the only Saviour there is, then there is salvation in NO OTHER, for there is no other Name under heaven given amongst men by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12) for Jesus is the only way to the Father, no man comes unto the Father but through Him (John 14:6).  Therefore whoever rejects Jesus Christ's sacrifice for our sins, has to pay the penalty themselves for their own sins in Hell's flames of torment for eternity. God takes no pleasure in men being destroyed. He loves His creation with an everlasting love.  That's the very reason why when Jesus looked over at Jerusalem, He wept over the Jews, because they missed their day of visitation of their own Messiah and He knew that would prevent them getting saved and instead get them damned to Hell.

Nothing gives us the right to thank God that all this is happening so that sinners can be destroyed; or to tell lies and say that God hates these people.  Where do you see in the Scriptures that God hates us?  The Bible says if we hate our brother, we are in darkness and we don't know where we are going because the darkness has blinded our eyes ( (1 John 2:11); Well if that is the case and we are NOT TO hate our brothers because it means we are in darkness, how can we say God hates anyone?  That would mean God was in darkness and that's ridiculous.

Actually Jesus said the very OPPOSITE: He said, "I say to you there will be more joy in heaven over ON SINNER WHO REPENTS, than over 99 who need no repentance.(Luke 15: 7)  "There is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents (Luke 15:10)

He is our Creator and knows all things.God loves us so much that Peter says God is not SLACK concerning His promise as some men count slackness, BUT IS LONGSUFFERING TOWARDS US, NOT WILLING THAT ANYONE PERISH BUT THAT ALL SHOULD COME TO REPENTANCE (2 Peter 3:9) In other words, God keeps delaying His coming in order to get MORE SINNERS saved - so that's a lie from the pit of Hell that Westboro Church is preaching and they are certainly not the Judge of men's hearts, so how can they possibly say certain folks are burning in HelL?  God is the Judge not us human beings and He said if we judge others, we make ourselves the Judge instead of God and we shall be judged  -  In fact, God says, "Who are you to judge another?" (James 4:12) that judgemental spirit of darkness will never be condoned by God who is the true Judge; for men can only  look at the outward appearance of man, but God looks at the HEART (1 Samuel 16:7).  We only love God, because HE FIRST LOVED US.  His Love is not only everlasting but unconditional.  He doesn't love us because we are good like we humans do.  Every one of us is a sinner and God demonstrates His own love for us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8).  So don't take any notice of that hatefulness your Church is spreading.  The gospel is a message of Good news that we can be saved.  God never focuses on hating people. He does hates some of the things we do when we sin, but never the actual sinner.

Every human being born in this world is born into Satan's kingdom of darkness - (spiritually) dead in (adam's) trespasses and sins and only Christ can make us alive (Ephesians 2: 1 & 5)  We are all born a sinner, walking on the wide road to destruction, totally cut off from God (spiritually) and on our way to Hell. Now here is the solution, the good news of the gospel message - that God saw our pitiful state and that we were helpless to do anything about our sinful state ourselves, so He died for us on the Cross to get us forgiven and when we receive Him, He gives us the right to become children of God, not born of flesh & blood or of man's will but born of God (John 1: 12 - 13). So when we repent and get baptized, our sins are remitted and we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38).  God gives us as long as possible to repent and receive His perfect sacrifice for sins, and when we do He delivers us OUT OF Satan's kingdom of darkness and translates us INTO the kingdom of God's love (Colossians 1:13).  In baptism our old man (that's the old Adamic sin nature) is crucified with Christ so that we are no longer slaves of sin (Romans 6:6). It doesn't mean we never sin again but I am sure you know 1 John 1:9 - look it up if you don't.  In the meantime, don't join in with the hate from your Church - I am afraid that's the Devil's message not God's.  His only ministry as our enemy is in this world is to KILL, STEAL and DESTROY but Jesus comes to give LIFE (John 10:10) - eternal life.  Jesus did NOT come into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved (John 3:18).  So focus on this, Jesus didn't come to condemn but to save.  Jesus didn't tell us to preach hates or be malicious.  The gospel message is clear and full of hope for ALL SINNERS to be saved.

Your comments could be a cunning troll trick. We note that you give no link/source to back your claims up. Give us the web-page link for that pastor/church. Go on. All his hateful statements will be on there, won't they? I've been a Christian 40+ years and never heard any such wickedness stated by any Christian. What if this virus is a way of wakening governments up to how sudden and prolonged grounding of aircraft, and drastic reduction of car trips, will swiftly deal with air pollution - doing what all their talking and prevarication over decades has failed to achieve?

As God is Sovereign, ever considered the possibility that this will leave governments without a leg to stand on once things get back to normal? We all know what human nature is like - humanity will get right back to doing everything they want to do, which will result in pollution spiking after an immense drop - but God warns of a future time when he will "bring to ruin those ruining the earth" - Revelation 11:18. What if your pastor is one of the jet-setters, who will get right back to globe trotting, the minute he can? This is not a time to be pointing fingers but to be in repentant prayer before God for our OWN sins, and that even if He is giving the world a warning shot across the bows with this pandemic, that we ask that, in judgment, He remembers mercy.

Consider the words of this old hymn: "Facing a task unfinished that drives us to our knees, a need that undiminished rebukes our slothful ease. We who rejoice to know thee, renew before thy throne the solemn pledge we owe thee, to go and make thee known. Where other lords beside thee hold their unhindered sway, where forces that defied thee defy thee still today, with none to heed their crying for life and love and light, unnumbered souls are dying, and pass into the night." And that's just the first 2 verses. SO applicable today to guide Christians as to our responsibilities!

When God revealed to Isaiah that King Hezekiah would get 15 more years added to his life, he told Isaiah to give King Hezekiah a poultice of figs

God told his prophet to have them make medicine for the King. Medicine and human agency does have a place in this

No, because SARS- CoV-2 is natural, not supernatural. Have your pastor produce his god, then that god can tell us if we are wrong...

On the off chance that you're not a troll...No, God is not punishing the world, he's not punishing anybody.  Jesus came to save the world, not condemn it. God is not hateful or malicious.

I'd quit listening to your pastor if I were you.

I will not pity, nor spare, nor have mercy, but destroy. (Jer 13:14)

Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not, but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling. The Lord is very pitiful and of tender mercy. (Jas 5:11)

What your pastor is preaching is superstition. The causes of such natural events are well understood, and they are natural, not supernatural.

Covid-19 (Coronaviruses are all sorts including ones which are just associated with colds in humans) is the result of human sinfulness and wilful ignorance of God's instructions for stewardship of the Creation, so in a sense your pastor is right. He is however 100% wrong about what humanity is being punished for and in fact his attitude is an example of exactly the kind of sin which results in this kind of plague happening. He needs to turn round before he gets burnt.

The Bible teaches that God is never the source of evil. James 1:13 states that God does not try people with evil things, and 1 John 4:8 sums up God’s character in these words: “God is love.” He could never be responsible for the misery inflicted on innocent people by random storms, earthquakes, and similar tragedies. Also even though God has not stopped bad things from happening, he never makes them happen. Job 34: 10-12. God's issue is alway with spiritual leaders:

    1. (OT) The Lord said listen to Judah, but people listened to Levi/Moses. 2. (NT) The Lord said listen to Simon Peter Barjona, but people listens to Saul/Paul and the pope.
