A 'fruit machine' is a gambling machine that has a series of spinning wheels, arranged on an axle with a portion of their outside edges visible to the player. The wheel edges have various symbols on them, like 7's, gold bars, bundles of money, and traditionally also pictures of fruit like cherries, this is why they are called fruit machines. The wheels spin and come to a stop, and if you've lined up a certain pattern of symbols, then you win a prize. Sometimes the wheels spin from pushing a button, but traditionally used a lever, which is where another nickname comes from, 'one-armed bandit'.

It is the same thing as a slot machine. It is called a fruit machine in some places as some of the combinations that can be made are watermelons, cherries and lemons, depending on the machine you use. There may be other fruits depicted, but those are the ones I have seen.

It's a vending machine that dispenses fresh fruit in order to give the gamblers some energy to keep going.
