Can a relationship survive political differences?

This morning a friend of mine said Hi to me on Messenger. I sent her a post in which a member was touting the successes of his candidate. My friend responded by posting a retort someone in the comments section had posted. A back and forth ensued which left my friend upset. She proceeded to avoid my calls and barely responded to my text after a while. She said maybe we can talk tomorrow. The last thing I wanted was to ruin the start to her day. So, why is it that people disagree so strongly and have such a visceral reaction to politics? Also, since this is a big part of who I am, it can't be avoided in a reasonable relationship. Should I try to come to terms somehow with her differences or just say goodbye?

I have quite a few friends who differ from me politically.

We just agree to not discuss it.
