Is there an actual food shortage in America, or is it just a bunch of selfish idiots hoarding food?

There's no  shortage.  There's always been enough food to go around.  But it's not AVAILABLE to some people.  Believe it or not, there is 'food insecurity' in the richest country in the world.  Even before the virus, some people had trouble getting enough to eat because of their economic situation.

This is the same situation in the world at large.  Thousands of people die of starvation every day, somewhere in the world. Not because there isn't enough food to go around, but because we can't get it to them.

Yes, there is hoarding in this time of virus, and some things are disappearing from supermarket shelves.  But that, in itself, won't cause anyone to starve.  There's always -something- to eat.

There is no food shortage. Just panicky idiots and a failure of the vaunted invisible hand.

Personally, I do not eat much toilet paper or hand soap. Your tastes may differ.

Actually, I have recently heard an interview with the president of the organization in charge of our nations food distribution network that keeps restaurants and grocery stores stocked say that there is plenty of food in large distribution centers across the country and their ability to get said food to the consumer is still active. If you see bare shelves it is likely due to panic shopping

    It's a distribution problem.

Almost all discretionary spending has stopped and the demand for foodstuff, especially non perishables and frozen goods has spiked 4 fold.

Supply isn't short though but the ability to truck it can't be quadrupled overnight.
