They used to call us 'les rosbifs'.

Please note that these nicknames do not necessarily indicate 'hate' towards anyone. They date from times when we had fewer opportunities to meet, and are often used almost affectionately.

The french word for the english is Rosbif, the german word is Tommy, the American word is Limey, the Australian word is Pommie. Other countries have words too.

I do not mind nicknames for people from different countries, but it is interesting that only people from predominantly white countries are allowed to have nicknames or even shortened versions of their country names used these days. For example you can talk about a Brit but you cannot shorten the term for a person from Pakistan or Japan.

The equivalent insult would be "rosbifs", but nobody says that anymore. It started in the 19th century and died in the second half of the 20th century.

People would most likely say "les Anglais" (the English) instead.

Rosbif, or roast beef, because of their perceived propensity for eating roast beef.
