Montreal was THE main city in Canada until the 1980s. Why and how did Toronto take over?

Montreal has its problems (Covid19 still being one of them), but it's still nicer than Toronto. The latter is rootless, full of itself, has nearly no charm, and is only known for the CN Tower (a tall building, so what?), the Blue Jays and the Raptors.

Canada's beauty is in its difference ! What they have in Montreal is not in the western part of this beautiful country and vice versa.

I'd hate to feed the troll but Toronto didn't do much.  Montreal use to be the head office of a lot of Canadian large corporations.  Then through the 70's Quebec put in their French only sign laws.  A lot of those head offices decided to move.  Toronto was the top of the list for many of them.
