It wasn't always. The painting was stolen in 1911. Stolen by an Italian patriot, who though it should reside in Italy. This gave the Mona Lisa much noteriety..

It is a good portrait of an Italian merchant's wife. But other than the atmospheric effects--which are great-- I don't think it's especially great. I much prefer the self portraits of Rembrant, in terms of emotional expressions.

No clue.  I much prefer the Vans (Eyck and Dyke) [See image for Eyck portrait.]  When I saw the Mona Lisa in person I was disappointed with it.  For one thing, it's so tiny.  For another it lacked the contrast that the Vans give their paintings.  It was two-dimensional.

    Not sure about MONO Lisa-------

but the MONA Lisa was a piece of advanced art work, at the time, that revolutionized  portrait work.

If that's the case, you & nephew could make a ton of money with knock-offs.

Your nephew COPIED IT. He didn't conceive it from scratch AND ALSO YOU LIVE IN THE F*CKING 21st CENTURY. This painting was original back then and it took a lot of time and effort to draw so it was an achievement.
