What's a more acceptable issue?

"I'm having car trouble."

or

"a crackhead set the train on fire, I'm gonna be a little late."

Either excuse would work for me.

flat tyre was my excuse even when I was on the train. My brother used say the train got a flat tyre.

"A crackhead set the train on fire" puts more emphasis on "it is not my fault".  The "I'm having car trouble" could be entirely your fault.

"I'm having car trouble" would suffice.  You can supply the details later if you and your audience want to hear it when you get to the office.
