    Step on the brake, shift in gear, release brake, press gas pedal....for automatic cars. For manual transmissions, hold the brake and push in the clutch before shifting to first gear, or reverse if you need to back up. Someone else said in their answer, to look around to make sure it's safe. That is always true and best practice.

    Your foot should be on the brake pedal, if it's manual transmission your foot should be on the clutch and brake pedal.
