Is it unwise to try and learn the fiddle and the violin at the same time?

Yes, I know they are the same instrument, I mean the styles.

It can't possible matter, and if it does then the person in your life telling you that it does isn't really very nice are they? Being a friend or mentor means supporting growth.

Depends on your intended audience. If you are going to try out for a classical symphony, lightly playing the strings and being able to control the sound decibels with a light bow touch is imperative. If you are going to play for a band, heavy bowing so the instrument can be heard and being good at the fingers in rhythm is imperative.
