Having a companion of another species isn’t unique to humans.  It’s also found with fish, spiders, other mammals and so on.  It usually starts because each offers a benefit to the other so they work together and build a bond.  This is how dogs and humans ended up with each other; dogs knew how to help us hunt and we gave them food.  Cats I have no clue but they knew we would give them food LOL

Cats were first a rat hunters in the ancient Egypt. Rats were destroying their crops, so having a wildcat was very useful.
