What kinds of health questions are ok to ask?
I often see answers that are critical, telling the person to ask a doctor. Why does Yahoo Answers have health categories then?

Most of the medical questions being asked in Yahoo should only be asked of a doctor. Seems like 90% of the posts in the medical section are just attention whores and hypochondriac begging to be noticed. For instance, there is an idiot (my gay stalker) that keeps post "does____ cause cancer" over and over, with the blank being all manner of idiocy. Here are a few examples...
And those are just today's entries. He has been posting this kind of idiocy for years in the cancer section the same way Suicide Sophie has been posting suicide threats over and over in the mental health section. Then there are the idiots that post pictures of an obvious bug bite asking if it's skin or breast cancer. If you go to any of the medal/mental health sections you have to be a bit dense to not see that most of the posts are either obvious lies and trolls or just hypochondriacs posting the same rants over and over. Look for yourself.

One can ask just about any health question, but need to understand that no one on YA can diagnose them so questions about serious or potentially serious issues, should be directed to a healthcare professional. Users can also include text that lets the respondents know they have, or will make, a doctor's appointment, but are simply seeking info from others (have other users experienced something similar or are familiar with a specific condition, medication, injury).

Questions on general health such as nutrition, diet, vitamins, exercise, motherhood, childhood diseases, bug bites, etc are fine. Users will let you know when you have crossed into areas where a doctor is needed.

General questions about health are fine. What's not so fine is when someone gives a list of their symptoms and asks, 'What should I do?'
Even if some of us happen to be real doctors, the asker has no way of knowing who to believe. There are people on here who are more than capable of deliberately giving wrong and even harmful advice.
If you have an actual health problem, you should ALWAYS talk to your own doctor.
