Everything I listen to would be considered edgy by the mainstream.  But if I had to pull a random person out of my *** (so to speak) I'd say GG Alin.

Just about everything I like listening to has an edge to it.

Everyone who ever wrote a song thought they were edgy when they wrote it, even cookie-cutter pop artists.  But some acts really did go that extra few feet over the line and gained a following.

Elvis was edgy because he loosened his tie, sweated and shook his hips on state, all of which were strictly taboo at the time.  Zeppelin and The Doors were edgy because they went outside the standard song formats and wrote dark lyrics about forbidden thoughts and activities.  Madonna was edgy because she had very sexual lyrics and performed in her undies.  Motley Crue was edgy because of their offstage antics, and the fact that whatever they did on their last album was what every other band made their next album sound like.  Metallica was edgy because they were a 'thrash' band who had radio and MTV airplay.  Sonic Youth was edgy because they mixed musical genres that weren't supposed to be mixed together.

I was even edgy once, because I cut my hair short while in a hair metal band.  I was tired of all the work of long hair, and I wanted to do something a little different, so I got the Big Cut.  The very next week Ozzy, Nikki Sixx, Jon Bon Salami, Rod Stewart and the guys from Metallica all did the same thing.  True story!

  • None that are still around today but some that I did find a little uncomfortable listening to sometimes would be Suicide, Throbbing Gristle, The Birthday Party and maybe some Scott Walker.
