Does my voice sound the way I hear it, or the way recordings play it?

I notice that whenever I record myself singing or talking, it sounds terrible. Does my voice sound the way I hear it myself, or the way I hear it on the recording?

Your voice sounds closer to a recording played through a good system and speaker. What you hear when you speak is partially sound emitted and partially vibrations through your cheekbone.  That's why recordings don't sound like your voice to you.

Almost everyone I know hate their voice.  I hate hearing my own voice, but I always get compliments, Ive  been told I should apply for a job that require talking on the phone, that I have a very calming voice

So you hate hearing your voice naturally or on a recording?
