Either one is correct, but using "cook" a second time in the sentence is not necessary because it's implied. You could also avoid the issue and make the sentence more interesting by changing the sentence a little.
"He couldn't cook at all several months ago, but now he has learned this useful skill."
Or more simply:
"He only recently learned to cook."
