That can be a difficult one. You need to first learn to appreciate any good things you currently have. That may be something terribly simple, but it also may be something others don't have. Life is a good one. If you are alive, you can be thankful.

You also might focus on things you can do TODAY. What can you accomplish? What tasks, lists, or fun things do you have or expect to accomplish today? If you don't have a list, then make one. If you can't figure out things to do, then volunteer somewhere. In doing this you will help others, and see your life may be better than you think, with fewer worries than you are interpreting.

Determine what you CAN control and focus on that. Write some things down that you can have an affect on. Those are the things you should think about.

Develop a good social network. In this you will have someone to share your thoughts and feelings with. In this, you will see what others are doing with similar issues.

Expect good to prevail over negative things. That is another way.

This all comes down to the fear of being out of control, and so by changing your thinking, your emotional and behavioral response also change.  You cannot control or change the future, but you can change your thought patterns onto the moment and what you can do in the now.  Subsequently, there will be a different emotional and behvavioral outcome.

When we have a lot of anxiety, it puts worrisome thoughts into our heads. There's two ways to get rid of those thoughts.

One is just to calm down. The easiest way to do this is to breathe slowly till you feel OK Two psychiatrists, Brown and Gerbarg, say a 10 or 20 min slow breathing exercise - 5 breaths a min - is good and 20 min twice a day is a therapy for anxiety. The exercise is inhale and exhale gently, 6 seconds each.

When you're calm, you can think your way through a problem instead of just worrying about it. Think about the worst thing that can happen, how likely that is and what you could do if it happens. In a stressful situation, think about the different ways you can respond and decide which one is the most intelligent.

Don't make mountains out of molehills.

When you use the thinking brain, you get control of the emotional brain, and you feel better.

Also, replace negative thoughts with positive thoughts. Count your blessings and remind yourself of your successes.

The treatments for anxiety range from simple stress reduction methods to therapy and medication. Don't overlook stress management - it can help even with very bad anxiety.
