You were asked to read something.
From what you read,
Why do you think the men were in the clearing?
So it is asking why the men were there?
Why did the men go to the clearing?.
A clearing is an empty space in the woods, forest, or
in a crop area.
So why are the men there?
Why did they come there ?
What did they come there to do?
Both of these question's may tell you why they were there?

The text must mention some men. The text must mention they are in a clearing (an open space, often in woodland). The text must tell you something about why the men are in the clearing. At the very least, the text must must give some possible ideas about why the men are in the clearing. The question is asking you why you think the men are in the clearing, based on what it says in the text.

A clearing is a small area in a forest or wood without trees in it.
