Why do we need to a Coast Guard when we already have a Navy?

In terms of separate military branches, why do we need to have the United States Coast Guard when we already have the United States Navy? Like, we have multiple naval forces even though we only need one.

They serve two entirely different functions.

While some duties can overlap.....the Coast Guard is more about Homeland security,  law enforcement on the high seas,  search and rescue,  and so forth.

The US Navy, is more about a MILITARY presence, and being able to foward deploy US Military might and secure our interests around the world,   by force if necessary.

As I said.....sometimes, rarely, the services overlap, with one doing the duties of the other..........either by design, or complete accident.

One of my Navy Ribbons is actually an award from the Coast Guard, for services we rendered in one of THEIR operations.

On one ship, we actually discovered a craft adrift and saved 3 lives.

We just happened to be in the right place at the right time, with good spotters on duty.   It happens.  Not really our mission..........but we step up when need be.

Aircraft carriers cannot help much with weekend boating accidents or aids to navigation.

    Completely  different jobs

Since the Coast Guard is not DoD they can be used for law enforcement  against civilians, the US Constitution  forbids the military from performing  law enforcement  against  civilian  citizens

The Coast Guard’s  primary mission is maritime law enforcement and Search and Rescue.  The Navy’s is To Protect US interests globally.

The United States Coast Guard has supported every War America has been in since it was called the Revenue Cutterr Service. The CG is essential for domestic SAR efforts Harbor and port security augmenting the DHS and spearheading illegal Narcotics trafficking plus a dozen or so missions.

In Vietnam Coast Guard had some of the best CSAR pilot's ever seen and they racked up a lot of DFCs and Air Medals. If you were a pilot or aircrew shot down was a possibility a Coast Guard pulled you out of Indian country!

The mission of the Coast Guard is entirely different than the Navy.

The Coast Guard specializes in Search and Rescue, Safety and Law Enforcement, the Navy does not have the legal authority to conduct Law Enforcement I.E.  Drug smugglers.
