Is it a good idea to buy a Prius with 40k miles for $20k?

I’m trying to save money and where I live has some of the most expensive gas prices in the US. I also like the look of driving a Prius and looking eco friendly. Would I be better off with a civic?

I don't think I would buy a hybrid (or full electric) used - unless it was 'certified used' from a dealer (and even then I would be hesitant).

You failed to mention what year it is, and whether or not it still has a factory warranty.

    Prius -- http://www.fuelly.com/car/toyota/prius -- about 47 mpg

    Civic -- http://www.fuelly.com/car/honda/civic -- about 32 mpg

For $20K, you are looking at a used 2017 Prius.

You can get a 2018 Civic for $15K.

Assuming 15,000 miles a year, $4/gallon.  Yearly fuel cost

    Prius -- $1275

    Civic -- $1875

    You save $600 a year.

You will have to drive the Prius 9 years to payback the cost of the vehicle.

IMHO, NOT a good idea to buy a Prius

-- unless you plan on driving 25,000 miles a year (taxis save enough on gas to pay for a Prius)

-- you like spending money to look "green."

No, because if something goes wrong with the battery that is a huge expense, it could cost thousands of dollars.

I would look up the bluebook value to get an idea of the value.  Be aware if the battery is degraded its a huge expense on any of those types of cars to get that replaced, so check to see what bluebook says.
