    5 parts_________£ 250

    1 part__________£ 50

    4 parts_________£ 200

    50:200 pounds is the ratio.

  • 1 month ago

    1 times x = x

    4 times x = 4x

    x + 4x = 250

    5x = 250

    x = 250/5

    x = 50

    Then 4x becomes 4(50) = 200.

    Answer: £50/£200.

    Add the ratios and divide into £250 for one ratio

    Hence

    1 + 4 = 5

    250/5 = 50 ('1' ratio)

    Hence '4' ratios is 50 x 4 = 200

    Hence 1:4 :: £50:£200

    Since the ratio is 1:4, you can think of the amounts being x and 4x.

    x + 4x = 250

    5x = 250

    x = 50

    So the shares are x (50) and 4x (200)

    £50 and £200

    You need to divide the pounds into five equal portions.

    Each portion is £250/5 = £50

    One of the shares is 1 portion, or £50.

    The other share is 4 portions, or £200

    1:4 means 1 part to 4 parts .. which is 5 parts in total.

    So .. divide 250 by 5 to get 50

    and if 50 is ''1 part'' then ''4 parts'' is (50 x 4) .. 200

    making a 1:4 share of 250 .... 50 and 200

    total shares is 1+4 = 5

    1/5 of 250 is £50

    4/5 of 250 is £200

    If you are splitting it two ways in a ratio of 1:4, then if we set x and y as our two variables, they are in the ratio:

    x/y = 1/4

    and added together is 250:

    x + y = 250

    We now have a system of two equations and two unknowns that can be solved.

    Solve the second equation for y in terms of x, then substitute into the first and solve for x:

    y = 250 - x

    x/y = 1/4

    x/(250 - x) = 1/4

    Multpily both sides by 4(250 - x):

    4x = 250 - x

    5x = 250

    x = 50

    Now we can find y:

    x + y = 250

    50 + y = 250

    y = 200

    The values are:

    £50 and £200
