How to explain insomnia to my dad?

I have insomnia and struggle with shutting off at night. My dad doesn't understand at all. When he was a kid, he watched a documentary on fatal insomnia that scarred him for life. Since then, he believes that anyone who doesn't sleep regularly is going to go insane and die. My mom and I can't convey to him that my struggles are normal and that people's biological clocks work differently. Every time he sees me awake he says I'm going to die and that I need serious help. I'd like him to stop and realize what he's doing is irrational. Any help?

Have your doctor explain it to him.  Or look at reputable sources such as Mayo Clinic and let him read the "For Patient" articles on insomnia.
