So the Irish were ALSO SLAVES?

Why don't we ever hear about this? I know there is this joke in Blazing Saddles...but I didn't think it was TRUE?!?

Over the course of World history, virtually all races were held as slaves at one time or another.  Slavery was not an institution unique to the Americas.

In the US they were mistreated, in Ireland years before they came to America they were slaves.

Well, yes and no. In colonial times in America, average people could not afford to pay their fare to immigrate to the American colonies. So a system evolved where a person of lesser means, such as an Irish person, could sign up to be an "indentured servant" for 5-10 years, in exchange for having their passage paid for to cross the Atlantic. So these people would be "slaves" for their 5-10 year period, and then they would be released to be free citizens at the end of their indenture.

Actually, the first Africans that were brought to Virginia were under the same contractual arrangement. But later it was decided just to keep Africans as slaves for life, at least until 1865 ended all that.

It’s absolutely true, and they’d helped construct a lot of the railroad system in the US, and we’re subject to racism as other cultures are

The Irish in the USA were not slaves. Many - especially those who migrated to America to escape the potato famine - were indentured servants. There was little real difference between being a slave and being an indentured servant EXCEPT the children of indentured servants were not indentured servants.

The only thing I can think of is when America was under British rule, they had no where to house all the criminals, aka Scottish and Irish who fought against the British in various wars. So, they sent them to the colonies to work of their sentences. Main colonies were Australia, America and the Caribbean.

This is the reason why a lot of people in the Caribbean have Scottish and Irish in the dna.
