It was established statutorily in 1879 as "Dominion Day", but first celebrated in 1867, and renamed to "Canda Day" in 1982.

The nation of Canada. It was since the USA is nearby and had it's day so close by on July 4th. Sort of like Thanksgiving in Canada and USA a month apart. I believe that is the case but you would have to confirm on Wikipedia.
