Is adding vanilla extract to hot cocoa wasteful opulence or fun and cool?

I'd just use the plain old word "nice." It takes the bitter edge off and rounds out the flavour meaning you can use less sugar overall. Try adding a grating of nutmeg as well. That's a little luxury for sure.

It is not at all wasteful. I make chocolate syrup for hot cocoa, and I add vanilla extract to the chocolate syrup.

It just tastes good. If you don't have any, try a bit of Evaporated milk. Nearly as good.
