Why can't we just use the empirical rule all of the time instead of learning how to calculate the z-scores?

    Because it is not accurate enough to be useful.

    Because in two years time you will have forgotten the numbers for the empirical rule but the logic of calculating a Z score (which is basically just scaling to a common reference) will still be obvious.

    First off, I'm a bit confused because I always calculate z-scores even when I do use the empirical rule, so I'm not quite sure what you mean by that.

    In any case, it's important that we learn how to calculate the probabilities for z-scores other than 1, 2, or 3 because in the real world, we rarely ever get perfect z-scores like that, so we need to be able to calculate the probabilities for less "perfect" z-scores too.
