Processor socket type Motherboards that use a current socket Socket 775 for Intel or Socket 939 for AMD are the best upgrade candidates. Motherboards that use older sockets Sockets 462 (A) or 754 for AMD or Socket 478 for Intel offer fewer processor choices, but are still reasonable upgrade candidates.

it is too old for a Ryzen. here is the list:

i would go with the Phenom II X6 1100T, which you can get for around $170 here:

" can I put an amd ryzen cpu "

    No

    "what about an FX 8320?"

Probably. It's not listed on the motherboards CPU list, but it's basically the same as some of the other CPU's are approved.  With that said, I wouldn't spend any money on a computer that's probably a decade old at this point

Your board is only good for 95w TDP FX processors. The best ones are the FX-8370e, FX-8320e, FX-8310, and FX-8300. The FX-8320 you mentioned is a 125w TDP processor.

Food for thought, the Ryzen 3 3100 is going to run circles around even the best FX processor, like the FX-9590. If you can't find a FX processor at a good price then upgrading the RAM, CPU, and motherboard might be a better alternative.

No, Ryzen processors are not compatible. The socket on your motherboard has 942 pin-holes, Phenom II processors have 938 pins and FX processors have 940 pins. Despite the pin count not being exact, AM3+ boards are compatible with AM3 processors. Ryzen processors have 1331 pins. On top of that, Ryzen processors only work with DDR4 RAM. If you want a Ryzen processor then you'll need a new socket AM4 motherboard. I recommend boards with at least the b450 or b550 chipset, and the latter is better.

Yes, with some 95W TDP AM3+ motherboards you can stick an FX-8320 or FX-8350 into the socket and it's been known to work. Some boards will also downclock the CPU and sometimes give you a wrong CPU warning. It's not worth the hassle.

The fact remains that an FX-8350 can barely manage to put up a fight against a low end 1st Generation Ryzen 3 (4c/4t) CPU and it gets railroaded by a newer 3rd Gen Ryzen 3 (4c/8t) like the Ryzen 3 3300x. The FX processors use modules which have 2 cores per module. The 2 cores in that 1 module have to share resources which leads to a performance loss. When push comes to shove, an 8 core FX processor was more like an old 4c/8t Core i7 processor which has Hyperthreading. AMD was sued because of the 8-core claim, and they lost that lawsuit. All of this makes an 8-core FX-8300 series CPU at anything over $60 a bad deal. I'd recommend saving up to replace the motherboard, RAM, and CPU. Ryzen 4000 series processors are around the corner.

I would rather refer to the Gigabyte web page for that information.

    https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-970A-DS3-r...

You will see that Rryzen is not supported.
