Isn't our war in Afghanistan the new Vietnam? Why are we still there anyway?

If anything being there is encouraging terrorism. And it's costing us billions. That money can be spent on our sick and starving citizens but instead is being used to bomb brown people and mosques. What's our objective anyway? To remain there indefinitely? To colonize?

It seems that the  U.S. Geological Service have discovered nearly $1 trillion in mineral deposits in Afghanistan: iron, copper, cobalt, gold and lithium.

We are not going to leave all those minerals to the Chinese.

The war is winding down. The disengagement  talks continue in Qatar without much publicity. Unfortunately, the Taliban won in that they now control most of Afghanistan. It is just that it is not in their interest to hold a victory party.

This because Pakistan, the Taliban and the USA fear that Isis survivors are moving in. Therefore, when you hear of a Reaper killing someone in Afghanistan-it may be the Taliban who suggested where the target was over lunch in Qatar. Expect the Talilban to unofficially consent to having some US bases indefinitely, because obviously they have no Reapers themselves. After all, the Mujihadeen and the Taliban are many of the same people. There is no reason why the Taliban should want random rouge Islamofascists on their turf. They had enough trouble over Al Qaeda, and their hash and opium business is probably pretty good.

So the answer to your question; is that the US military is still in Afghanistan because Islamabad and the Taliban like it that way as long as the US soldiers stay behind the wire and kill their mutual enemies with their toys. The US military is the devil that the Taliban know, other possible players like China and India are the devil they don't know. In fact. their mentality is to respect their enemies as worthy foes and all that. Such is realpolitik.

As another answerer said, it's because of the military-industrial complex.

Trump has been trying to get us out of there but has not been successful. It's an unwinnable war. We should not be there. If anything it's making the afghans mad and will ruin potential diplomatic relations between the USA and a future independent and sovereign Afghanistan.

There isn't a war. Its helping them police law and order. We cannot just abandon our allies and let chaos take over. Many Afgans are suffering. It is our duty to fulfill our promises to them.

Google the military industrial complex. They make a killing in invading other countries.

We are there to prevent the Taliban or Russia from taking over the country and host terrorist camps. Once we leave, we can no longer go back in there to kill terrorists, especially if Russia takes over Afghanistan. We risk going to war with Russia if we attack terrorists inside Afghanistan. Vietnam never attacked the USA but terrorists from Afghanistan launched the 9/11 attack that killed thousands in the USA. Trump the Russian puppet wants us to leave Afghanistan because that is what Putin wants. Putin wants to annex Afghanistan because there are billions of mineral deposits in that country.
