You take many tubes which fit inside one another.. Inner most tube has highest refractive index. This reduces as we move out side. Say ten tubes having n1> n2,>n3> n4> n5> n6> n7> n8> n9>n10. Send a ray of light at angle a at the center. As it moves to n2, it bends further, When it reaches n10, it will have total internal reflection. The ray goes on internally reflected all the way without leaving the tube. This is the principle of optical fiber. Of course if the angle more than a, some light will go away. That loss is small. For better communication, lasers are used.

A transparent fibre from which light cannot escape ( due to total internal reflection). It must have great clarity to avoid attenuation. This enables light to be carried around bends avoiding the need for straight line paths. The intensity does not diminish by the inverse square law because the light does not spread to a greater area with increasing distance. For communication purposes the wave speed of a bounced wave must not differ from the wave speed of one that goes straight. Otherwise the pulses become distorted and stretched with distance moved.
