No one is safe from this virus even skinny people have died from it as well as healthy people. They say to keep your immune system healthy to slow down complications. With that being said, just be careful when you shop and keep the 6 feet distance. This virus is not like smelling your body to see if you have diabetes. The minute you hear someone sneeze cover your mask and quickly walk away since its airborne. A few people forget to cover their coughs and sneezes. The masks are not 100% full  proof it's just to slow transmission. If you have a compromise immune it's best to stay home. That's why people are in the hospitals. Hope your mom feels better.

Because of pre-existing conditions, symptoms may be worse for her IF she gets it. However, it doesn't mean that she will get it. And if she does get it, it doesn't mean that she will die. Best thing to do is get saved if she isn't already, pray and trust God. Worrying will not keep her from getting so stop worrying.

Yes, it's a BIG risk. Will she die for SURE if she catches it? Not necessarily--but a system that is already compromised in ANY way is always a bigger risk.

Someone with non-insulin dependent diabetes and hypertension is no more likely to die from a corona virus than they are from any other disease.

The  flu virus or the bad cold virus that you mom probably developed last winter didn't kill her; and it's very highly unlikely that corona virus is going to kill her.

ALL diabetics have a higher risk - both type 1 and type 2 - both insulin dependent and not insulin dependent.

How well she controls her sugar will make some difference.  If she has good control of her sugar levels - then she has a better chance of recovering if she get the virus.  Even if she doesn't have good control, catching the virus doesn't guarantee death.  Some people with poor health conditions have recovered.

BTW - EVERYONE is at risk from this virus.  Healthy people with no medical conditions have died too.  It is just that people with health conditions have a higher risk than those without a condition to begin with.

  • From everything I've read, any diabetic is at a much higher risk of having a more serious case of coronavirus if they catch it (numbers in the UK show that Type 1s do worse than Type 2s, but Type 2s are still twice as likely as the general population to have severe cases).  If your mom is obese, that's a big issue as well and some of the diabetes studies haven't really separated that out. Then throw in hypertension!

Worrying that she is going to die may be over the top, but she could get very sick and has a good reason to be hyper-vigilant. By the way, current thinking is that diabetics are NOT at a higher risk of catching it (that could change with more data over time)..

She may not die, but getting better may take a longer time.
