John locke: People cannot delegate to the government something that it would be illegal for them to do themselves. Do you agree?

    The government can be required to perform specific tasks via legislative action but otherwise, people cannot simply "delegate" the goverment to do anything, particularly something illegal.

    Aside from what powers government can legitimately have, the very nature of authority prevents delegating authority you don't have.

    No, not at all. It would be illegal for me to lock a person in a prison cell, regardless of what crime that person may have committed. It would be illegal for me to carry out the death sentence, also regardless of what crime the person committed. Criminal justice is just one example of something we as citizens have delegated to the government that we can not legally do ourselves.
