If a person is gifted, do they have an obligation to utilize their gift?

    Not an obligation, but a terrible waste if they do not.

    No.  It can be used as a derogatory term too. You can hear it in the way others say it TO YOU.  Those that are gifted try to make money from it usually...or some other form of recognition.

    May people who are labeled as gifted have no idea what that means so they cannot utilize it.

    "Gifted" is a meaningless term.   Everyone is gifted,  but not everyone's gifts are appreciated or useful in society.   At one time, someone who was exceptionally good at digging roots with a sharp stick was 'gifted'.  Today,  someone who can code algorithms at age 10 is considered 'gifted'.   As a high school teacher,  I can tell you with certainty that often 'gifted'  means 'parents are wealthy'  and the most brilliant students are usually those with the worst grades and the least popular.

    No one is obligated to do so, but it'd be unfortunate to be gifted and not make the most of it if it is something you enjoy.  One simply needs the motivation.
