Why would "the moon hit [my] eye like a big pizza pie"?

That song makes no sense to me. Why would pizza be anywhere near my eyes? Then they say the moon. What? Why?

Dean Martin probably had pizza thrown at him on numerous occasions, and has no idea how uncommon that experience is. He was just the kind of guy that you want to throw your pizza at.

Songs, like poetry are often written using metaphors. That may be the case with that song. Most likely Martin didn't write the song, just recorded it.

It's just a silly song. "When the stars make you drool like a pasta e fasul" is another line in the song.

I think he’s saying that the moon looks like a big pizza. When something “hits your eye“ it means you’re just looking at it.
