Can you put contacts in water for a little while and then afterwords put it back in solution?

There is NO reason for this.  If your contacts are NOT on your eyes - then they should ALWAYS be in a solution.

No. Two reasons. #1. Water is not sterile, even from a newly opened bottle. #2. Water does not contain the right concentration of salt. This change in salt content can alter the matrix of a soft lens.

Both of these assume that we are talking about soft lenses, sponges that absorb whatever they ares stored in. RGPs are a different story.

In an absolute emergency situation, it may be possible to use water for a while, preferably from an unopened bottle (as in opening it to put some water in a lens case before consuming the rest of the water, but you should avoid using tap water.  When you have the opportunity to obtain your preferred/prescribed disinfecting solution (NOT ordinary saline) I would suggest changing the solution at least once before using the lenses again.

If they are "soft" contacts, which are what most contact lens wearers have, you cannot put them in water. The lenses will be ruined.
